Film Industry Case Study

For this blog post, I'll be doing a case study on two film companies: one big and one small. I'll look at their history, the movies they make, their marketing strategies, and other important details about how they work. I’ll also focus on two films from each company to show what kind of media they produce and how they adapt to the film industry.
BIG COMPANY: DISNEY+

On November 12th 2019,The Walt Disney Company launched Disney+, a streaming platform. It was created to compete with streaming services such, as Amazon Prime and Netflix. Disney features a variety of Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and National Geographic movies and shows how quickly Disney+ became incredibly popular. In 1923 Walt Disney signs a contract with M. J. Winkler to produce a series of Alice Comedies. In October 1924 a distributor from New York contracted to distribute the Alice Comedies and this date became the start of Disney+.

Also, they offer content produced by major brands like Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and even new shows and movies for all age groups – children and adults alike. Be it cartoons or serious documentaries, Disney+ has tough competition and a large audience.

Disney+ employs a comprehensive marketing strategy through well established businesses such as Disney, Marvel and Star Wars. These brands are sought after by both children and adults, hence the popularity. The firm advertises via trailers, social media, and other Disney enterprises such as the theme parks. Additionally, Disney also makes it a point to release some of their films in theatres before they are made available on Disney+.
IMPACTS OF CHANGING TECHNOLOGY AND CONVERGENCE/DIVERSIFICATION:
Disney+ has benefited from streaming which offers people the chance to watch movies and shows whenever they want. Disney+ also makes it easy to watch content across different devices like your phone, Ipad, and TVs. Disney+ is also really good at bringing its different businesses together with movies, shows, or theme park experiences all working together.

SMALL COMPANY: BLUMHOUSE
Blumhouse was founded in 2000 by Jason Blum. Its well knownfor low budget, unsettling films with some sort of plot twist. Paranormal Activity (2007), The purge (2013) and Get Out (2017) are some of Blumhouse's biggest hits. They are also known to work with new directors.

Productions is known for horror films but also produces psychological thrillers and some films with social messages. It produces low-budget movies that tend to gross a number of people out. Blumhouse is known for being creative and discovering new ways to spin scary tales. They are known for several of the most popular movies: The Black Phone (2021), The Purge (2013), and M3GAN (2022).
MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION PRACTICES:
Blumhouse Productions use a more straightforward marketing strategy, depending heavily on word of mouth and social media. Blumhouse usually use trailers and posters everywhere so that people hook onto their movies. For example, Some of Blumhouse movies are released in theaters but then are made available on streaming services like Amazon Prime or Netflix.
IMPACTS OF CHANGING TEACHNOLOGY AND CONVERGENCE/DIVERSIFICATION:
Blumhouse Productions has made appropriate changes to adapt to technology with releasing most of their films on streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. Blumhouse also takes advantage of technology, such as releasing movies directly to streaming platforms if they can’t get a traditional theater release. The company is even expanding into TV shows, giving it additional avenues to reach audiences.
